2nd International Congress on Planning and Closure of Mining Operations
The 2nd International Congress on Planning and Closure of Mining Operations will be held to address the risks and costs involved in mine closure. The congress includes more than 60 technical presentations from Specialists from around the world, including a presentation from Golder’s Bjorn Weeks. The congress has been organized by Gecamin, the University of La Serena, and CMLR-SMI (the Centre for Minded Land Rehabilitation-Sustainable Minerals Institute), of the University of Queensland, Australia.
Make sure to also catch session 3, presented by Neeltje Slingerland, PHD student at the University of Alberta, “Geomorphic Analysis for Tailings Dam Design in Consideration of a 1000-year Closure Design Life” on Thursday November 8 in Ballroom C. The paper, co-authored by Nicholas Beier, professor at the University of Alberta and Golder’s Allison Isidoro, Associate and Senior Geotechnical Engineer, discusses erosion of sand dams and the potential impacts on post closure dam performance.

The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) has recently launched the “Mine Closure Checklist for Governments” publication. The Checklist provides policy makers with the essential elements of a successful mine closure governance framework, based on leading international guidelines and standards, as well as international experience. This session will provide an overview of the Checklist, including its contents and the process that was used in its development.
