Controlling Risks of Trenchless Pipe Construction Beneath Railways

Trenchless pipe crossings beneath railways pose unique challenges for controlling ground deformation and maintaining safe railway traffic. For more than a decade, CN Rail has implemented an undercrossing permit program, which has led to early detection and mitigation of potential issues with planning and installation, and resulted in better control of risks and safer rail operations. Common risk factors identified during the permit reviews and site monitoring are summarized in this presentation, to assist utility owners, designers, railways, and constructors with mitigating and managing underground railway crossing risks.
