ICOLD 2019 Annual Meeting/ Symposium

The International Congress on Large Dams (ICOLD) Annual Meeting and Symposium brings together dam specialists and owners to discuss best practices in dam design and management. Golder’s technical specialists will present the latest research on dam safety, remediation design, hazards, and extreme conditions, and are technical reviewers for conference papers. Golder is a proud sponsor of ICOLD.

Golder’s Technical Presentations:

Refurbishment of Ontario Power Generation’s Sir Adam Beck Pump Generating Station Reservoir, Niagara Falls – Design

Wednesday, June 12, 2019 @ 15:40-17:30

Presented by: Shiu Kam, Senior Tailings Consultant
Shiu Kam will summarize findings from Golder’s field studies regarding dyke stability and foundation piping risk, and discuss rationale of remediation design.

Refurbishment of Ontario Power Generation’s Sir Adam Beck Pump Generating Station Reservoir, Niagara Falls – Construction Execution

Wednesday, June 12, 2019 @ 13:00-14:50

Presented by: Peter Merry, Group Leader, Geotechnical Engineer
Peter Merry will present a case study on the execution of the Long-Term Remedial Measures that Golder designed for OPG, as well as construction methodologies and sequencing, challenges, construction quality assurance results, and performance monitoring during recommissioning.

Canal Embankment Failure Mechanism, Breach Parameters and Outflow Predictions

Wednesday, June 12, 2019 @ 13:00-14:50

Presented by: Hossein Kheirkhah Gildeh, Water Resources Engineer
Hossein will present various potential canal breach scenarios from Jensen Reservoir to Milk Ridge River Reservoir in southern Alberta, Canada using a two-dimensional hydraulic model, and examine the breach parameters such as dimensions of failed dike, time of failure and characteristics of outflow hydrograph based on the canal hydraulic properties as well as flood inundation extent downstream of the canal.

Design and construction of an auxiliary labyrinth spillway for an ageing dam

Wednesday, June 12, @ 15:40-17:30

Presented by: Jenna Simzer, Geotechnical Engineer
Jenna will present on the geotechnical, hydrotechnical, and environmental issues associated with the design and construction of the auxiliary spillway that was selected to provide a means to generate additional spillway capacity to address the flood risks without impacting the existing spillway at the downstream dam.

Session S17 T3 – Geohazard

Thursday, June 13, 2019 @ 8:30-10:00
