At 2020park, Golder Supports the First Development to Achieve BREEAM Communities Certificate in Norway

Golder recently audited and certified Norway’s first large development project under BREEAM Communities International Technical Standard. The nearly 120-acre development, known as “2020park,” is transforming an old brewery area into a vibrant space. The resulting construction is one of very few development projects in the world that has received a BREEAM Communities Outstanding result and is the world’s first certificate within the BREEAM Community scheme to achieve an overall score of more than 90%.

BREEAM Communities is an international standard and the world’s leading sustainability assessment method which is used to measure, improve, and certify social, environmental, and financial sustainability on large-scale development projects by integrating sustainable design into the planning process. The standard is suitable for development projects that are likely to have a significant impact on the existing communities, infrastructure, or the provision of local services.

Under development since 2015, the 2020park development is to be carried out in stages over 20-30 years with a future oriented environmental profile for buildings, energy solutions and functionality. The business complex, located outside Stavanger in Norway, is a 45,000 m2 area and part of a masterplan comprising an area of approximately 120,000 m2. With large investments in infrastructure, refurbishment of the old brewery buildings into offices, shops, and services as well as a new office building, 2020park has the potential to include 10,000 modern workspaces and close to 500 residences.

Golder, a leading BREEAM auditor in Norway, has nearly a decade of experience and has certified more than 40 development projects within regular BREEAM standards. Golder’s creative and solution-oriented consulting experience provides developers with insights and opportunities regarding a wide range of sustainability issues which can arise when working on large projects, both from a local community perspective as well as from future users.

2020park was one of six registered pilot projects for BREEAM Communities certification in Norway. The Golder team interpreted the technical manual and provided guidance and recommendations to the project managers Advansia throughout the urban planning and design process.
