Dr. Paul Dittrich Recognized as a 2017 Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada

Golder is proud to congratulate Dr. Paul Dittrich, Senior Geotechnical Engineer and Principal, who has been named a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC). Since 1963, the Council of the Institute has been honouring top-in-class engineers with the title of Fellow for their exceptional contributions to engineering in Canada.

Dr. Paul Dittrich, P.Eng., is recognized nationally and internationally for his contributions to practice, research and education in geotechnical engineering. His widely-based consulting practice with Golder Associates involves national and international experience on numerous large scale civil engineering, resource development and mining projects across Canada and in eight different countries. He is a highly sought consultant and responsible for technical leadership on projects that involve difficult ground conditions or require the development of innovative solutions using both standard and new technologies.

“For over 55 years, Golder has been employing and nurturing the talents of engineers. Paul joins not only hundreds of top-class engineers in Canada recognized as Fellows, but other senior engineers that we are proud to say have contributed to building Golder’s reputation for engineering excellence in Canada and globally,” said Louise Menard, President, Americas, Golder Associates.

Paul’s main areas of expertise include site characterization, foundation design, settlement analysis, stability of slopes, embankments and excavations, specialized geotechnical analysis/modelling, geotechnical monitoring and ground improvement technologies such as preloading, wick drains, micropiles and vibro-flotation. He is the author or co-author of over 20 technical publications of significance to the geotechnical community, and is a mentor and volunteers his time to the Canadian Geotechnical Society.

Paul’s nomination was prepared by Golder engineer, Dennis Becker, and strongly supported by industry professionals, including Dr. Kerry Rowe of Queen’s University. Dr. Becker, an EIC Fellow himself, works out of Golder’s Calgary office: “This nomination came from the collective input and desire of senior and Executive Members of the Canadian Geotechnical Society. Paul’s career achievements to engineering in Canada are significant and we are proud that he is being recognized.”

In addition to his extensive technical experience, Paul has received other accolades such as the Casimir Gzowski Medal for the best civil engineering paper by the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers, the R.M. Quigley Award for best paper published in the Canadian Geotechnical Journal, the Victor Milligan Award for the best technical paper by Golder Associates, and the L.G. Soderman Award, awarded annually to engineers pursuing graduate studies in civil engineering at the University of Western Ontario.

Paul will be inducted as a Fellow, along with 20 other engineers, at an awards gala hosted by the Engineering Institute of Canada which will take place in April 2017 in Ottawa, Ontario.

Other Golder engineers who have received this prestigious EIC Fellowship include two Golder founders, Victor Milligan (1989) and John Seychuk (1990), as well as Murty Devata (1993), Delwyn Fredlund (1993), and Dennis Becker (1996).
