Golder Earns Bronze and Gold Awards from ACEC for Innovative Practices

Golder was recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies-Washington with 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards for two unique and innovative projects. Engineering Excellence recognizes engineering achievements that demonstrate the highest degree of merit and ingenuity.

Golder received the Best in State Gold Award for Uniqueness and/or Innovative Application of New or Existing Techniques for the Del Monte Corporation (Oahu Plantation) Superfund Site Project. Golder designed and constructed a phytoremediation system at the project site to treat several hundred tons of soils contaminated with chemical fumigants as well as contaminated groundwater that was pumped from a nearby aquifer.

“As of September 2017, the phytoremediation system has successfully treated over 4.7 million gallons of groundwater to concentrations below drinking water standards,” said Gary Zimmerman, Principal, Senior Consultant, Golder. “We are proud of our collaboration with Del Monte Fresh Produce (Hawaii) Inc. and the results it is providing to them.”

Golder also received the Bronze Award for Uniqueness and/or Innovative Application of New or Existing Technologies for the Arrivé Tower Project. Arrivé is a 41-story skyscraper in downtown Seattle with a 75-foot deep excavation into stiff glacial soils. Golder performed a 3-D shoring analysis which resulted in less pressures than typical values used in Seattle. These results set the stage for new approaches to shoring design and more economic shoring construction in the future.
