Heather Lammers selected for SME Board of Directors Internship Program

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) has chosen Golder’s Heather Lammers as the first intern to receive the opportunity to gain insight into the higher levels of SME leadership. The SME Board of Directors Internship Program is a newly developed program designed to engage members 40 years of age and under to promote leadership and commitment to the future growth of the organization. Heather will serve two years in this position to develop expertise and knowledge of SME and bring fresh ideas to the mining industry.

Heather, a senior project engineer at Golder with a background in geological and mining engineering, is the first recipient of this internship which will provide the opportunity for professional development within SME. As quoted in Mining Engineering magazine, Heather sees a bright future for her involvement in the new program, noting that “returning value to our membership is a relevant issue that SME faces at both local and national levels. My goals within SME continue to be to promote professional development, networking and knowledge-share opportunities for students, young professionals and mining industry experts.”

In this role, Heather will continue to be an active member of SME at the local and national levels. Since 2015, she has served as a member of the Colorado Section’s board of directors and currently is the Section chair. Heather has been involved in SME since 2008 in various roles, and at the national level she is a member of the Environmental Division and the Tailings Committee.

“I am excited to be a part of this new program with SME and to contribute to the growth of the organization through engagement with mining industry professionals,” reflects Heather.

With more than 12 years of experience, Heather’s expertise is in mine closure and reclamation design, and heap-leach, tailings storage and waste rock facility design. She is currently a PhD candidate in the Mining Engineering Department at the Colorado School of Mines where she is researching tailings dewatering methods.
